You will be able to perform location adapted biochar calculations, free of charge. Get registered and start immediately calculating. The tool is adjusted to Californian rules and regulations. By calculating for other locations, you might reduce accuracy.
We distinguish between feed biochar and soil biochar. For the feed biochar, which is used directly as feed additive for animals and for bedding, stricter rules apply. Certain feedstock needs to be used and the carbon content needs to be at least 90% or more. Feed biochar is also tested for possible harmful contents, such as PAH’s (polyaromatic hydrocarbons), metals and other harmful chemicals, which should not exceed certain levels.
For soil biochar less strict rules are applied, but certain feedstock is not allowed either, such as biochar from manure, municipal waste or not plant based feedstock.
Currently, rules and regulations are discussed in California and are not clearly defined yet. Until such regulations are in place, users can choose between the strict European rules and the rules of the IBI (International Biochar Initiative). This choice has an influence on the access to the European Carbon Certificate market, where certificates are currently traded much higher compared to the possible US Carbon Certificates.
